EVALUATION OF DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR A MODERN ORTHODOX CHURCH IN RUSSIA: CRITERIA AND METHODS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (74) June, 2021

The study examines methodological issues in the assessment of design solutions in modern Orthodox architecture. Today, professionals and researchers uphold different ideas concerning criteria for such assessment in Russia; however, there is no single methodology to enable a comprehensive assessment of all important design characteristics in an Orthodox church. A systematic study of the modern church design codes and a review of the existing scientific and methodological approaches to the evaluation of religious buildings enabled the main assessment criteria and value characteristics of the modern Orthodox church to be identified. The author proposes a set of value characteristics, which could become a framework for evaluating and reviewing design decisions in Orthodox church design and provide methodological organization and reasonable objectivity to the work of the diocesan architect, the diocesan architectural and art history commission and other experts who are involved in the project approval process.

A STUDY OF METHODS FOR EVALUATING DESIGN DECISIONS IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF MODERN ORTHODOX CHURCHES IN RUSSIA

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (71) September, 2020

The article presents a study of methods and criteria for comprehensive assessment of modern design decisions in the architecture of orthodox churches. The topicality of the research work is determined by the need to improve the efficacy of decisions made by architects when designing church buildings, as well as by the need to enhance the quality of modern orthodox church design. The research methods employed include, among other things, a review of the legal framework applicable to church architecture design. In addition, the work examines the scientific and methodological foundations of an integrated approach to the evaluation of civil architecture and explores issues in the development of formalized methods aimed at establishing the historical and cultural value of buildings. The author provides arguments in support of the need to develop a methodology for evaluating orthodox church design decisions, including orthodox church value characteristics and assessment criteria.
