RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE CITY IN THE CONCEPT OF О.М. UNGERS AND HIS FOLLOWERS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (67)

The article constructs a model of relationship between the building and the city based on the texts written by Oswald Mathias Ungers, German architect of the second half of the 20th century, and a number of other contemporary researchers. The main postulates imply the use and transformation of the formal language of the context in new architectural projects. This model has not yet been the subject of a special study; however, it appears or is implied indirectly in the projects of Ungers’ followers. The genesis of this relationship becomes clear not only from Ungers’ texts and projects but also from the extrapolation of the teacher’s main postulates to the early projects of R.Koolhaas, E. Zenghelis, H. Kollhoff and А. Ovaska.

THE PRINCIPLE OF ANALOGY: TOWARDS THE GENESIS OF DESIGN FROM CITY TO BUILDING IN MODERN ARCHITECTURE

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (66) June, 2019

The article describes the group of modern architects demonstrating succession of architectural and town-planning ideas associated with interconnection between the concepts of city and the construction of architectural objects through the principle of analogy. This approach is interesting from the point of view of identifying organizing structural characteristics in the design of both the city and the house, because it provides an opportunity to expand the field of knowledge in the area of spatial constructions and gives rise to new methods of architecture design based on transforming the modern city concepts. The purpose of analog architecture is to preserve the integrity of the city when reproducing urban analogy types that previously existed or are coming to existence on the basis of collective life in the city. The well-known Italian architect and theorist Aldo Rossi is a key figure for modern analogy architecture. The article also discusses the early projects of his students Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, demonstrating continuity in the development and transformation of their teacher’s ideas.
