ON THE METHODOLOGY OF MODELING LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS IN RELATION TO THE CITY OF ZELENODOLSK

The article presents a comprehensive analysis of the structural and planning framework of the city of Zelenodolsk, spatial characteristics of its built environment, and development of the open public spaces. Spatial and environmental morphotypes, their boundaries and morphological features were determined. General recommendations for the imagery of Zelenodolsk’s design code are given. The findings can provide a basis for the development of local environmental and spatial regulations of Zelenodolsk for its historically established areas, new construction, and reconstruction zones.

MENTAL REPRESENTATION OF KAZAN CITY IMAGE

The article discusses methods of city image definition and presents the results of an empirical study on mental representation of Kazan carried out by methods of mental mapping, in-depth interviewing, questionnaires and GIS data analysis. Based on the survey data, the main types of image in the perception of the territory are identified and the boundaries and toponymy of the city’s vernacular districts are described. The key elements of the territory image are studied by means of mental map analysis, and the most significant objects and spaces for residents are examined. The results of the study reveal correlation between the mental perceptions of the territory and the recipients’ real depictions made during the study and the uniqueness of perception of the territory by its inhabitants. The authors conclude that the iconic symbols and spaces that form the image of the city act as anchors for the formation of its local identity and self-identification of the population with the territories.

«GENIUS LOCI» AS AN IMPULSE TO THE REVITALIZATION OF THE ADMIRALTEYSKAYA SLOBODA AREA IN THE CITY OF KAZAN

The transformation of the concept of «genius loci» is considered in the context of redevelopment projects realized in the historical city center and the tangible and intangible aspects of the latter are elicited on the example of Admiralteiskaya Sloboda in Kazan. The study involved the use of general scientific methods, field research and interdisciplinary synthesis. A retrospective, demographic and urban planning analysis revealed challenges and resources of the site. Recommendations are given concerning the preservation of the spirit of the place and the shaping of Admiralteiskaya Sloboda environment’s identity: functional enrichment of the area, development of a network of social services, residential reconstruction and construction, preservation of the cultural heritage and transformation of the industrial sites into modern cultural and creative clusters, organization of a landscaped recreational framework, and promotion of the area’s cultural brand.
