THE SPATIAL AND COMPOSITIONAL TREATMENT OF THE CITY-CENTER ENSEMBLE IN ROSTOV-ON-DON IN THE POST-WAR RESTORATION PERIOD
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (73) March, 2021
The work examines the compositional and spatial changes in the historical built environment of Rostov-on-Don’s central area that were implemented during its restoration in the 1940-1950s. The situation at the start of the Great Patriotic War is described, and the projects of historical city center restoration are reviewed. The study revisits the basic principles that were employed in the spatial and compositional treatment of Rostov-on-Don’s central ensemble: differentiation between the main street and secondary streets in the urban fabric, compositional transformations (introduction of new highlights, increased building heights, preservation and reconstruction of fragments, creation of new living conditions), and creation of new ensembles (project proposals and their implementation). The main proposals for preserving the existing buildings as a basis for creating a new image of the city’s central ensemble are considered.
