Current aspects of form generation for unmanned vertical take off vehicles

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (87) September 2024

We examine the principle of unmanned flying in the design of vertical takeoff vehicles as an effective way to solve the problem of development and interaction among remote territories of Russia, especially its northern regions. The influence of technological and geoclimatic aspects on the generation of form for unmanned aerial vehicles is considered based on domestic and international developments and student projects on this topic. Systems analysis and environmental approach provide a rationale that the shaping of UAVs for operation in northern conditions to suit the helicopter-type aerodynamic design is the most optimal.

THE TRAM AS A SPECIFIC OBJECT OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT DESIGN

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (70) June, 2020

Recently, designers and manufacturers have developed interest in the tram as a key element of urban public transport considering its eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness. Ekaterinburg has a wide network of tram lines but the fleet of trams is old and does not meet modern requirements for public transport. In 2019, the administration of the city came up with a call to develop a convenient electric public transport vehicle. This challenge requires a new systemic approach to tram design in which the defining role belongs to its engineering and infrastructural characteristics.

THE TOY AS A TOOL FOR DEEVELOPMENT OF ENGINEERING DESIGN THINKING

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (57) March, 2017

The article considers the issue of developing engineering design thinking in students. The rising generation do not acquire proper engineering design skills resulting in insufficient professionalism of engineering graduates. One of the ways to resolve this issue is to familiarise children with the world of design through special toys. However, the toy should not turn into a model of some device but should be systemic and help bring up a broadly skilled personality rather than a narrow specialist. Only a toy of an aesthetically meaningful expressive form with a plot and role scenario and technical contents can become the tool that can help overcome the problem of engineering illiteracy.

THE SHAPING OF ANDROID ROBOTS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (47) September, 2014

This study concerns the basic role of design in the shaping of android robots for the purpose of creating anthropomorphic multipurpose robots that would be psychologically compatible with human nature, organically fit into the environment and society and promote the evolution of the contemporary civilisation. Analysis of form-generation techniques available in design suggests adequate concepts for the innovative adaptive system "person-environment-machine". Design as a synthetic discipline integrates the functional, aesthetic, ecological, value-oriented and signifier meanings into all elements of android robotics. The outcomes of the study will help ensure systemic scientific and technical integration and effective adaptation of android robots in all walks of human life, optimisation of costs in national robotics and provide considerable competitive advantages to Russian robotics in international business processes.

ECOLOGICAL THEMES IN URBAN ART DESIGN

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (42) June, 2013

Human comfort in an urban environment is determined by the unity between the visual images of all components of this environment: architecture, design and landscape, and their harmony with the inner human nature. The most prominent component of the person’s visual perception is art objects in the urban environment. An art object is an object of art which represents both material and artistic value filled with the semantic and functional content. The meaning of an art object in an urban environment may be identified based on international experiences, analysis and classification of which helps identify the following features: genre-relatedness, integral character, self-sufficiency, functionality, and modularity or transformabilty.

The experience of creating art objects in Russia, which is not yet widespread, shows that the closest to this notion are numerous sculptural forms or compositions with stylized ironic implication.

This article considers art design products only. The basic distinguishing features of this genre is the creation of compositions in accordance with the principles of design, using techniques and methods that belong to this creative activity. The designer’s approach to an art object allows the latter to be consciously given one or several functions.

The design projects of art objects («Garden of Lanterns», «Global», etc.) made by the students of the Industrial Design Department at the Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts (Ekaterinburg, Russia) for the competition «Small Architectural Forms of Ekaterinburg» follow the international tendencies in the design of art objects. The ecological orientation of the projects is due to the aggressiveness and pollution of the urban environment and its insufficient comfort. The natural images of the art objects and user-friendly design help considerably alleviate the adverse impact of the environment on the individual, create a positive and comfortable atmosphere, and improve the quality of life.

ECOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES OF FORM GENERATION IN DESIGN

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (41) March, 2013

The need to address this theme is dictated by global environmental problems in the world, in the country and in the Ural-Siberian region as pollution is affecting both the inner world of the individual in all aspects (spiritual and physical) and the surrounding environment. Environmental design is a mediator, or an interface between the internal and external worlds of the individual, playing a key part in human evolution. The manufacturing technologies keep destroying natural resources and have reached a critical level of conflict with human nature. Addressing the environmental issues is natural for a socially responsible designer who understands and shares the problems of contemporary society. This study seeks to make a contribution to the resolution of the contradiction between the outcomes of technogenic activities and public health and to draw attention to ecodesign as a primary factor in the promotion of the ecological outlook in society. One of the ways to achieve this lies with ecodesign. The purpose of the article is to identify a set of visual and artistic ecodesign techniques through:

- identification of ecological techniques in residential and public space design,
- consideration of innovative directions in phytodesign,
- analysis of the use of waste and garbage for making furniture and accessories.

The author suggests using the biomorphic and anthropomorphic principles of form generation as ecodesign’s principal tool, along with images and emotions associated with human physiology and psychology.

Images, symbols, materials, natural lines and forms, colours, emotions and associations are most effective for promoting ecological world views in society.
