Influence of Russian wooden architecture on residential and household buildings of the Sakha people in the 18th–19th century

The article examines the influence of Russian wooden architecture on residential and household buildings of the Sakha people. The key role of establishment of a postal service between Irkutsk and Yakutsk is considered, and the resettlement of Russians and Sakha people is retraced. The reasons for using log buildings by the Yakuts are identified, and the structural features of the Russian log hut and balagan (light wooden shed) are studied. The Ponomarev Tower is compared with the Yakut fortress, and the traditional barn of the Sakha people is reviewed. The structure used for drying sheaves is considered, and the first experiences of using zavalina (log piles) and seni (kind of anteroom) as a balagan are analyzed. The peculiarities of the transformation of residential buildings in Sakha are determined: the use of log notching in the frame-pillar system of the balagan; combination of cribwork with balagan; construction of a three-chamber log house with Russian hut plan. The study identified two main periods of The influence of Russian wooden architecture on the traditional architecture of Sakha is found to have had two main periods.
