The artistic and cultural context of the «Organ Grinder» costume sketch by A. Benois from a private collection

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (90) June, 2025

The costume sketch for the "Organ Grinder" from the ballet "Petrushka," created by Alexandre Benois, demonstrates not only the artist's distinctive style but also possesses significant artistic autonomy. The expressive pose and meticulously crafted details distinguish this sketch as one of the most striking examples of the artist's theatrical works. Discovered in a private collection, the drawing serves as a valuable resource for studying the evolution of Benois' creative work during his collaboration with S. P. Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes." The article examines the stylistic features of the sketch, incorporates historical and bibliographic sources, and analyzes its role in Russian and European art of the early 20th century. Particular emphasis is placed on the artistic significance of the work and its influence on the scenographic traditions of the era.
