Self-published book design: statement of the problem

The article problematizes the study of self-published book design — a field of inquiry at the intersection of design, book culture, and key vectors of sociocultural development that remains largely overlooked by scholars. It analyzes key socio-cultural trends within the context of self-publishing: digitalization, democratization of creative practices, and growth of media production and consumption. The article raises the question of the specific nature of design within this new paradigm, where traditional market-driven criteria are being supplanted by new ones, adequate to the author's active role. A comprehensive program for further research is proposed, which includes the analysis of self-publishing authors' motivations and goal-setting, target audience, connection between the author's design concept and its final realization, development of a typology for self-published book design, formation of new paradigm-relevant quality criteria, and identification of recurring visual strategies in self-published literature.
