Low-rise floating housing as a model for sustainable development under climate change: the Dutch experience

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (92) December, 2025

The relevance of the research topic is determined by the need to adapt housing construction to climate change and sea level rise in coastal and flood-prone areas. Floating architecture is considered a promising model for sustainable development. The aim of the study is to analyze completed floating architecture projects in the Netherlands to identify architectural, planning, structural, and regulatory characteristics applicable in other regions with similar climatic conditions. The research is based on the analysis of four projects and the systematization of their typological features according to their relationship with water, functional purpose, and structural solutions. The results include: identification of three types of residential architecture (houses on stilts, floating houses, amphibious houses), description of their structural systems (types of pontoons, anchoring systems, building materials), and analysis of the legal framework regulating this typology in the Netherlands. The characteristics that facilitate the application of the identified solutions in other regions with high risk of coastal flooding have been determined.
