A concept for the development of Kunche Street, Kazan: synthesis of the place’s unique features
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (92) December, 2025
Kunche Street is located in the Staro-Tatarskaya sloboda in Kazan. Despite its significant historical and architectural potential, the street is a little-visited public space. The concept for the development of Kunche Street was initiated by the «Old Town» Prefecture in order to increase the attractiveness of the street for visitors and residents of the city. The article studies the reasons for the low popularity of the street. The natural landscape, urban planning, architectural, ethno-cultural and historical features of the place are revealed. The basis of the concept is a synthesis of the most significant features: orientation to the embankment of Lake Nizhny Kaban, historical development of public and recreational functions on the lake and coastal areas. In the concept proposed for the development of Kunche Street, the street space is visually extended in the direction of the lake. A small bridge connects the embankment with a new, but historically determined point of attraction – an observation deck on the upper level and a pier at water level. The stylistic and color scheme of the new facility, the proposed landscaping elements and the historically formed space of Kunche Street are combined into a visually integrated structure. The new facility can become a recreation area and the basis for a variety of events that can attract guests and residents of the city to the expanded space of Kunche Street.
