Current methods for forming the environment of mental health centers

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (93) March, 2026

The article presents a comparative analysis of contemporary mental health center design practices worldwide over the past decade. Two groups of techniques are identified for creating a therapeutic environment: integration with nature and microclimate optimization as the basis for healing; and the creation of a flexible and emotionally multilayered space that meets the needs of privacy and communication. The objects examined demonstrate a pronounced trend toward deinstitutionalization of mental health architecture, aimed at creating a "home-like" environment where light, air, materials, and spatial organization become active therapeutic factors. The purpose of this article is to identify current approaches to shaping the environment of mental health centers based on an analysis of international experience. The findings confirm the role of architecture as a means of psychological recovery and the need to develop new standards for a humane and sustainable healthcare infrastructure.
