The typology of modular shaping in automotive design from 1962 to 2025

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (94) June, 2026

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the typology of modular shaping in automotive design based on historical examples and modern concepts, focusing on the main morphological solutions for mobile power and body modules, trailer systems, and skateboard platforms in terms of their impact on car shaping. The relevance of this research stems from the fact that the modern automotive industry is undergoing significant transformations, driven by the transition to modular platforms, electrification, and development of autonomous technologies. The modularity of transportation platforms is becoming a strategic focus in design, providing manufacturing efficiency, new customization options, and enhanced functionality in the face of increasing environmental and economic demands. The purpose of this study is to offer a typology of modular shaping in automotive design from the mid-20th century to the present day and to determine their impact on the visual language and functional organization of vehicles.
