Typology of public spaces in modern school architecture: a comparative analysis of foreign and Russian practice

The article considers the typology of public spaces in modern school architecture on the example of foreign and Russian practice over the last two decades. Modern school architecture is increasingly viewed as a complex spatial system in which public areas play an important role in organizing the educational process and shaping the environment of interaction. The school is considered as an architectural object containing public correlated with the basic types of urban environment — street, square, and courtyard. The study involved school projects selected according to the principle of comparability of architectural and functional characteristics. Differences in the degree of spatial connectivity, multifunctionality and integration of public spaces into the structure of the educational environment have been identified. The results of the study clarify the role of typological models of the urban environment in shaping the architecture of a modern school and can be used in the design of educational buildings.
