Applying a phenomenological approach to renovating Houses and Palaces of Culture in the context of youth identity crisis

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (94) June, 2026

The article examines the philosophical foundations of applying a phenomenological approach to the renovation of Houses and Palaces of Culture as a means of overcoming alienation and addressing issues of personal and sociocultural identity among contemporary youth. Through a phenomenological lens, the study explores profound questions of human "dwelling" within an environment and self-identification with a place of habitation, whereby architecture serves as a medium for individuals to find an existential foothold. By engaging with phenomenological scholarship, the research enables: an analysis of concepts such as "Genius Loci," a building's "atmosphere," and the "sensory characteristics" of architecture; a revelation of the "home" as a fundamental phenomenon of human existence, and of Houses and Palaces of Culture as places of tranquility, memory, and identity for the modern individual; and a rethinking of the renovation process to conceptualize the integration of the phenomenological approach into both the research and practical work at 20th-century heritage sites.
