Providing the acoustic quality of classrooms

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (95) September, 2026

The acoustic quality of classrooms is a critical factor determining the effectiveness of the educational process. Poor acoustic conditions lead not only to a partial loss of sound information (20-30% of the total volume), but also to a distorted perception of visual material, since a decrease in speech intelligibility disrupts semantic connections. In addition, unsatisfactory acoustics are a harmful production factor for teachers who are forced to raise their voices in loud or noisy rooms, which leads to occupational diseases of the vocal apparatus. This paper presents relevant criteria for assessing the acoustic quality of classrooms, discusses methods for designing classrooms, and provides an example of an unsuccessful acoustic solution for a 350-seat lecture hall and its correction. It is concluded that it is necessary to take into account acoustic requirements at the stage of architectural design of educational facilities.
