THE NEW BRUTALISM. ETHICAL AND ESTHETIC PRINCIPLES IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE 1950s
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (63) September, 2018
The article considers the relationship between ethical ideas and esthetic techniques of the New Brutalism architecture in the 1950s. The prerequisites for development of this architectural phenomenon are briefly described considering its basic concepts using examples in England, Italy and the United States. The concept of ethics in the New Brutalism architecture is defined. The visualization of this concept through rejection by architects of decorative elements that hide the original materials such as steel, bricks and ferro-concrete is examined. The stylistic characteristics of New Brutalism are revealed such as desire to lay bare the structural system of the construction, exposure of the architectonics of simple and intentionally rough-edged architectural forms, and location of the frame and internal elements on the building facades.
