“THE SECOND SKIN”: INNOVATIVE PROPERTIES OF THE TRADITIONAL CLOTHES OF ARCTIC INDIGENOUS NOMADS
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (64) December, 2018
The article provides a brief overview of the ongoing project exploring methods of making and using traditional clothing for the conditions of the Arctic / Far North, with emphasis on cultural, social and physiological issues within the interaction system “man-clothing-environment”. The case study is centered on nomadic reindeer herders, i.e. the community of Nenets from the Yamal Peninsula. The scientific novelty of the research lies in using the tools and approaches of technological aesthetics (design) for solving complex problems of preserving human life and health in extreme natural conditions. The expected results will pave the way for a holistic methodology and practical recommendations on the systemic design of the material and spatial environment (transport-clothing-housing as a single life-support module) for the conditions of the Far North.
