Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (64) December, 2018
The article describes the establishment of the iconography of Bodhidharma, who was the founder of Chan and Zen Buddhism. The image of Bodhidharma began to be established in the early Chan texts. Later the image received further development in painting, sculpture and Ukiyo-e. The article analyzes different types of the first Zen patriarch. The study is based on an analysis of over 120 portrait images of Bodhidharma divided into 5 groups: portrait belt images in ¾; portrait images in which the figure was given completely; the third group consisted of one-stroke portraits; the fourth group include scenes from the life of Bodhidharma; the fifth group includes Ukiyo-e with the image of Daruma. The evolution of the iconography of the First Patriarch enables the features of the unique Zen iconography to be traced.
