ARCHITECTURAL AND COMPOSITIONAL SYMBOLISM AND DESIGN PRINCIPLES OF CHURCH COMPLEXES IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAINS
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (75) September, 2021
Based on a theological approach, we consider the architectural and compositional symbolism of Christian church complexes in rough geomorphological conditions. We have studied differences in the architecture of monastic complexes in mountainous terrains pertaining to the traditions of eastern and western Christian churches. The basis for the formation of Christian churches in mountainous terrains is determined to be symbolic representation of spiritual growth. Architecture is considered as supporting the symbolism of the spiritual content of Christian churches depending on their location on the terrain. We have developed a system of principles for designing churches in complex geomorphological conditions. An experience in designing the restoration and expansion of St. George's Katerlez Monastery in Kerch located on a mountainous terrain is described.

MODERN ORTHODOX SPIRITUAL AND EDUCATIONAL CENTERS CREATED DURING RECONSTRUCTION OF HISTORICAL INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES IN THE URAL REGION
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (73) March, 2021
In this article, we supplement the methods of reconstruction of historical industrial facilities with some special considerations to be taken into account when deciding on the location of religious objects. We have developed a set of criteria for assessing industrial architecture complexes that are preferable in terms of accommodating spiritual and educational centers. Methods are proposed for determining correspondence between the structural parts of the industrial enterprise to be reconstructed and elements of the religious object accommodated. It is noted that historical mill complexes have planning and spatial characteristics that are close to the needs of a modern Orthodox spiritual and educational center. The project of the spiritual and educational center to be located in Staroutkinsky Metallurgical Mill under reconstruction includes an educational architectural component. Its imagery has references to the historical design graphics of the 18th century Ural mills. We have found confirmation that historical mill workshops are close to Christian

MODERNITY AND TRADITIONALISM IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF ORTHODOX CHURCHES
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (57) March, 2017
In the article, we have analyzed the concept of modernity from different perspectives. We note some features of the philosophy of "modernity" calling into question its neutrality in relation to Christianity. We consider the vector of reference to the historical memory of Christianity justifying the traditional construction of Orthodox churches after "samples". We show differences in the relations to historical process in the concepts of "modernity". These differences are based on ideas of superiority of the present over the past, of the modern over the non-modern. Interactions between "modernity" and art and architecture are explored with the conclusion that the notions of modernity as a current historical moment are substituted with a notion of modernity as a politically engaged ear with its own specific ideology. The new concept is "modernity", understood as a politically biased era with its characteristic ideology. It is noted that Church operates its own comprehensive line of activity in architecture and art based on a conservative and sustainable design method.
