The article provides theoretical support to the methods and principles of architectural design in historical environments. The concept of historical city environment is defined. Contradictions between built-up heritage conservation and the need to modernize city environment are revealed. Criteria for identifying appropriate new design solutions and forms for a historical environment are developed.
