The article describes the emergence and evolution of the system of social and recreational spaces in cities in the context of the theory of urbanization, identifies basic patterns in this process and suggests a model for it. The operation of the model is shown using major historical cities as an example. Recommendations are provided for the development of public spaces in the planning and reconstruction of residential areas.
