RESTORATION OF THE MURAL "INDUSTRIALIZATION", A MONUMENT FROM THE GREAT AND RUTHLESS EPOCH

The article presents the history of creation, oblivion and accidental rediscovery of the mural "Industrialization" executed in 1930 by the artist Vasily Maslov on the wall of the Stroiburo house in Bolshevskaya Labour Commune. In 1937-1938, all headmasters, educators and many of the pupils of the Labor Commune were arrested on false charges and shot, and the artist Vasily Maslov was shot along with them. His monumental murals portraying Socialist construction were whitewashed, painted over, and papered. This article describes the history of these murals, presents a brief biography of the author and information about the techniques of their removal from the wall and subsequent treatment. Technical, historical and aesthetic rationales are provided for all conservation and restoration activities.
