The article examines the evolution and classifies the Orthodox churches of the Penza region by types of spatial solution and architectural termination and identifies typical and rare examples for the region. The author retraces the evolution of quaternary (chetverik) church structure proportions in the Baroque and Classicism periods and the development of the domed top. Techniques and variations that present additional subtypes of three-dimensional compositions are established.

The article discusses the compositional evolution and identifies the typological groups of cathedrals in Penza region. The development of the longitudinal axial and centric plans of Russian orthodox churches is retraced, and transitional types are determined. The techniques and variations that determined additional subtypes of cathedral plans are revealed.
