The article discusses visual perception of lighting ensembles and proposes a model for the lighting of urban environments and a typology of lighting spaces as objects of urban lighting design based on a conceptual framework for a system of artificial lighting ensembles.

The concept proposed forms a theoretical and methodological basis for complex functional and artistic lighting of urban areas and ensembles. The result of the development concept was to create the typology of the architectural ensembles of lighting, to design the methodology of lighting urban areas, creating a structural classification of urban spaces.

The urban lighting concept takes into account various conditions underlying the visual perception of architectural objects, including distance to the illuminated object, spatial position relative to the ground and speed of movement in space. This set of conditions is characterized by three categories related to the scale of lighting perception: landscape scale, ensemble scale, and ‘chamber’ scale, all being examined at different stages of urban lighting design.

The "landscape" scale is characteristic of the perception of large urban entities (city, district, waterfront buildings, etc.). The "ensemble" scale pertains to the perception of architectural and landscape complexes at medium distances. The "chamber" or "interior" scale is developed at the stage of "working draft" and "working documents" in the process of designing the lighting of architectural and landscape details.
