HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF KAZAN CITY MARKET SQUARES
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (40) December, 2012
Market squares in central Kazan have a long history of evolution. Having a convenient geographical location, city markets are a factor of natural town planning. In Russia, the well-known Volga Way connected Moscow with the east, and the Kazan Fair was the largest one on the Volga. The first market square in Kazan was Yarmarochnaya (Fair Ground), followed by Gostinnyi Dvor with log houses for visiting vendors. A fish market occupied the modern-day area of Tukay Square together with tenement buildings which belonged to the merchants of the Muzurovs and Kolesnikovs. The largest shopping and public centre was Sennoy Bazar with Sennaya mosque and two-storeyed buildings of the "Amur" hotel. Today the place of the Sennoy Bazar is occupied with a small square. The Central Kolkhozny market and adjoining shops occupy several city blocks. In the past, this place was occupied by Mochalnaya square with a tram line running through it and connecting the Volga landing pier with the Kremlin hill. In 1890, a railway station was built in the Mokraya Sloboda area together with an adjoining Privokzalnaya square. The square in front of the ZUM department store was called Mokraya in the 16th century. It accommodated a small market, and a Triumphal Arch was built near it. The Sorochy (Sukonny) market emerged near the cloth manufactory in 1714 around Sverdlova Street (former Nogayskaya road). In the place of the Lenin Garden, there was an extensive Nikolaevskaya square – a place of brisk trade and public entertainments. In the area of the Arskoye Pole there was Sibirskaya Zastava, the eastern gate of Kazan (today it is occupied by the Korston hotel and shopping complex). Many of the market and public squares have survived till today. The modern plan of Kazan demonstrates references to the outlines of the gone square in the bends of the old central streets and unusual orientations of houses, squares and parks. The stable link between the past and the present in the city plan and architecture confirms the viability of the hypothesis suggesting the historical dependence of contemporary planning reforms and the current relevance of ancient town-planning principles.
