USE OF COLOUR FOR IMPROVING THE OPERATION OF EXTREME VEHICLES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (34) June, 2011

Extreme types of vehicle are in continual development due to the emergence of new design industrial materials and design solutions. As a result, it has become possible to produce vehicles with a more varied colour gamut.

At the same time, the growing number of vehicles and their variety lead to an increasing number of accidents and emergency situations. In this respect, such factor as colour could help avoid collisions, improve orientation on road, in water or in air, and spot extreme transport in rescue operations, etc.

Currently, there are no standards or guidelines concerning the use of colour and graphics on extreme vehicles except for those used by the Russian Ministry of Emergencies.

Extreme activities may be divided into two groups by who performs them: professionals or amateurs. This division may determine distinctions in the use of colour and graphics for extreme vehicles as these groups operate their vehicles in a different way.

One of the main factors in choosing colour for an extreme vehicle is the area where it is going to be used and application.

Colour may help improve steering and control owing, first of all, to the possibility of precisely locating controls as a result of choosing specific colours for pedals, levers, etc.

Form and colour emphasize the specifics of operation of a particular vehicle, interaction between the vehicle and the user during work, sports or leisure. We can identify two aspects to the participation of colour in form: functional-informative and artistic-emotional. The first is mainly based on the psycho-physiological features of perception and reaction to colour; the second, on colour symbolism, colour culture, traditions, ideas of general composition, etc.

The ability of colour to contribute to safer operation, rescue work and location of controls and aesthetic characteristics of extreme vehicles requires creating professional guidelines for the colouring of extreme vehicles.
