THE PRINCIPLE OF OPENNESS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ‘ECONOMY CLASS’ HOSUING

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (36) December, 2011

The article is devoted to the provision of open spaces in ‘economy class’ housing. It identifies the main issues in the formation of spaces of this type in Russian practice. The author proposes a hierarchical structure of open spaces in a residential environment drawing on the existing domestic and international experiences. Spatial zones of four types are distinguished: personal, semi-personal, semi-public, and public. The characteristics of each zone are described. Based this structure, the author identifies and reviews positive examples in the formation of open spaces in housing from western practice. The importance of developing spaces under consideration for ensuring a comfortable housing environment is determined. Justification is provided for borrowing some of the qualities of open spaces in housing developments in western countries.
