THE INERTIA OF THE 1960s IN CONTEMPORARY DESIGN THINKING (on the issue of philosophical fundamentals of architectural criticism)

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (32) December, 2010

Despite being a review of design thinking during “Khruschev's thaw”, this article touches upon the deep-lying issues in architecture and its development. The 1960s were a unique period flourishing creativity. The spirit of freedom was in the air. Science and technology aspired to conquer space. Architecture responded with new concepts of form generation based on analysis of meanings conveyed by its spatial language. Space vehicle design emerged, architecture became mobile, and furniture turned into transformers. «The spirit of freedom» is considered in two forms: as a look into the future and as a flash back. A look into the future may define any utopian thinking, and flash back can define the chronotope of history, which we have not yet fully cognized. The article is comment No. 3 to the global theme «Architecture of the 20th Century» the first interpretations of which were published in "Architecton" Nos. 28 and 31. The period of «thaw in the USSR» and its interpretations in architecture have not yet been researched as such.

LIFE-ASCERTAINING ROMANTICISM IN THE DESIGN CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE 1960s

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (31) September, 2010

This article is a comment on the global theme «20th Century Architecture. Utopias and Reality» raised by A. V.Ikonnikov in his last uncompleted project. The uniqueness of the «thaw period in the USSR» has not yet been considered in architectural science as such apart from A.G.Rappaport's Latvian blogs. I address this article to him, my "confessor" since the early 1980s who helped me discover Husserl and phenomenology and philosophy in general.

«TOWER CITY» AND «GARDEN CITY» UTOPIAS IN THE PARADIGMS OF POSTMODERN PHILOSOPHY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (28) December, 2009

This article is a commentary on the global theme «20th Century Architecture. Utopias and Reality» raised in his last non-completed architectural project by A.V.Ikonnikov. Controllability as a machine rule utopia (according to L. Mumford) with regard to urban design and building processes, as a matrix of form, is a major issue in «open society» and «repressed consciousness» in spite of the contemporary revolution in information technologies.
