The article reviews phases in the evolution of atrium spaces depending on the development of building technologies, changes in society and atrium uses in buildings for various types. We propose a general definition for "atrium" in high-rise building and describe its basic functional characteristics and differences from the other prototypes such as arcade, gallery and passage.

The article presents a classification and a comparative analysis of the basic and secondary effects created by atriums in high-rise buildings, and considers their effect on the final result – the improvement of the building’s architectural characteristics. The proposed classification will allow atrium forms to be analyzed further in interrelation with climatic conditions, functional purpose and structural design system of a high-rise building.
