TOWARDS THE ANNIVERSARIES OF THE URAL STATE UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE AND ART NAMED FOR N.S. ALFEROV

The article is devoted to the history and evolution of Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute, now the Ural State University of Architecture and Art named for N.S.Alferov. It provides a historiographical review of the literature on the history of the university, identifies and analyzes the stages in its evolution, and concludes that in the first quarter of the 21st century, the Ural State University of Architecture and Art maintains its position as the largest architecture and art university in Russia and the only one in the Ural Federal District. This is a complex education, research and creativity institution that provides continuous multi-tiered training, including pre-university foundation courses; bachelor, specialist, master degree programs; doctoral studies, and professional development and retraining.

The article describes the life and scholarly research work of Alexander А. Starikov, rector of the Ural State University of Architecture and Art (Ekaterinburg, Russia) from 1990 to 2011 and holder of the honorary title People’s Architect of Russia. His role on the development of architecture and education and scholarly research is highlighted and his principal research works are analyzed.

THE HISTORICAL CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF THE CITY OF EKATERINBURG IN THE EARLY 20th CENTURY

The paper presents an analysis of Ekaterinburg’s historical cultural landscape and appearance in the early 20th century. Numerous publications are available on the history of Ekaterinburg, including the city’s architecture at various stages of its emergence and development. However, the evolution of the historical cultural environment of Ekaterinburg has not been adequately covered in the scholarly literature. In the meantime, this issue is of interest for both professionals and broader public interested in the city’s history. The historical cultural landscape of the city featured specific and uniqueness and had a lasting impact on subsequent development of Sverdlovsk during the first decades of the Soviet era.
