THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE PALLADIAN PRINCIPLES IN THE 18TH-19TH CENTURY COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE OF AUSTRALIA

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (80) December, 2022

The article describes the transformations of the Palladian architectural style in colonial conditions and outlines the history of Great Britain’s colonial policy with focus on Australia, where the territory governance specifics created a social demand for Palladian buildings. The period of the Georgian style in Australia actually became almost synonymous with Palladianism and was contrasted to the Regency style. The properties of the local building materials influenced the final result of the projects. The work of the first Palladian architect of Australia F.H. Greenaway is analyzed, and the characteristic features of the colonial transformation of the style and its individual features dictated by the climatic conditions are highlighted. His buildings are used as examples to draw analogies with the projects of A. Palladio and his followers. The evolution of Australian architecture to early Eclecticism and manifestations of neo-Palladianism in specific buildings are described.

PALLADIAN TRADITION IN 18TH CENTURY SPANISH ARCHITECTURE

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (77) March, 2022

The Palladian architectural tradition in Spain in the 17th-19th century is considered with emphasis on the buildings pertaining to the Spanish branch of the architectural direction that are little known to Russian scholars. The issue of cultural continuity and, at the same time, rivalry between Palladianism and Baroque and transformations of the style is touched upon. The buildings display references to and analogy with the projects of A. Palladio and his followers in other European countries. The evolution of the architectural movement and its significance in the European appropriation of Palladio’s legacy are considered in retrospect.
