Shaping the visual ecology of mobile interfaces: the evolution of iOS design from skeuomorphism to Liquid Glass

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (94) June, 2026

The article examines the evolution of iOS mobile operating system design in the context of the visual ecology of the digital environment. The key stages of the system’s development are analyzed: skeuomorphism (2007–2012), flat design (2013–2018), adaptive personalization (2019–2024), and the transition to the Liquid Glass concept since 2025. The study is based on V.A.Filin’s theory of visual ecology and interprets the interface as a visual environment that influences cognitive load and visual orientation processes. Contradictions between the aesthetic characteristics of the graphical interface and the principles of visual comfort are identified. It is concluded that the evolution of iOS design demonstrates a shift from adaptive metaphoricality to minimalism and personalization, followed by an attempt to synthesize previous approaches within a new digital aesthetic. It is emphasized that visual ecology can be considered not only as an analytical tool, but also as a design criterion for the quality of mobile interfaces.

Visual ecology: social, aesthetic and ergonomic aspects of graphic interface design

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (90) June, 2025

The article considers the evolution of visual ecology problems in interdisciplinary scientific research and changes in the content of the concept of "visual ecology" in the context of intervention of digital environment in everyday human activities. Problems of visual overloading of pages with information at the early stages of graphical interface design are identified. An analysis of a large database of modern digital products revealed key factors of environmentally friendly design of graphical interfaces. Conclusions are made that the environmental friendliness of a product is becoming one of the key formal features of modern design, and taking into account the requirements of visual ecology determines both the social and aesthetic aspects of design.
