GENETIC ASPECTS IN THE EMERGENCE OF ARCHITECTURAL PROTOTYPES AND SPATIAL MODELS OF RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FACILITIES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (74) June, 2021

The article reviews the emergence, development and differentiation of the architecture of research and education facilities on territorial, urban and project levels. The genetic (historical) process underlying different types of such research and education complexes is considered in the contexts of cultural episteme (knowledge system, according to Michel Foucault) and educational paradigms. The latter are categorized into syncretic, pre-industrial, industrial, post-industrial, and modern (“network”). By reviewing research and education facilities of various specializations in different historical periods and different geographic areas, the study identifies their principal architectural and planning prototypes – from sacral spaces to individual functional objects.

BASIC PRINCIPLES IN SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT OF MAIN FACILITIES FOR NEXT-GENERATION RESEARCH AND EDUCATION COMPLEXES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (72) December, 2020

The main functions of an educational complex and their localization in urban context are reviewed. Along with principles underlying the development of research and education centers, the article formulates principles employed in creating media information centers, innovative technology centers and other typological objects to be found in research and education clusters.
Public space is investigated in terms of social comfort. The main principles underlying the formal compositional structure of research and education complexes are classified based on the geometry of the latter. Several types of formal composition modeling of objects within such complexes are identified.

CITY AND CITIZENS: PUBLIC SPACES AS A MODERATOR OF HUMAN BEHAVIOUR

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (45) March, 2014

The article considers issues around the creation and existence of a public space in a modern-day city. Experiences in the design of effectively operating spaces of this kind are reviewed; principles underlying their functionalities and architectural imagery are formulated, and effects on human behaviour, meanings and typology of social processes are identified.

ARCHITECTURAL IDENTITY OF AN ORGANIZATION: SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT OF CAMPUSES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (38) June, 2012

ARCHITECTURAL IDENTITY OF AN ORGANIZATION: SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT OF CAMPUSES The article considers issues in the creation of functionally diverse campus spaces. The author reviews international experiences in the development of effective projects of this kind and identifies principles underlying their functionalities and architectural and spatial planning.

Virtually all international corporations, countries and universities (as organisations possessing similar functional features) tend to create detached territorial formations within city fabric. One of the essential ideas underlying campus planning is to provide a unified architectural and spatial environment in which most of the functional, social, technological and residential facilities are within walking distance. In campuses, it is public space that sets an environment in which objects exist. The spatial physical characteristics and architectural qualities of a campus are defined not only by the buildings and structures that are included into it or by their appearance and stylistics but, to a greater degree, by open spaces and their configurations.

The recent tendencies in corporate project design suggest that a common campus is becoming a popular strategy for creating new major complexes (whether technological or educational). This means that the «campus» system is developing and transforming, and new urban planning formations are being developed on its basis.

On the country-wide territorial planning scale, urbanistic modelling of new developments and regional enclave centres based on «campus» models undertaken within a national development strategy is becoming an effective tool for managing territorial and other kinds of resources. The system of regional modelling and strategic planning may help adapt general concepts and contextualize them within specific territories.

PRINCIPLES UNDELRYING THE ORGANIZATION OF EDUCATIONAL SPACE. ARCHITECTURAL SCHOOLS AND DESIGN SCHOOLS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (36) December, 2011

The article considers issues in the creation of new typological objects for educational needs, such as architectural and design schools as well as schools of art. The author reviews international experiences in the development of effectively operating projects of this kind and principles underlying their functional and spatial organisation.

Architectural schools and design schools as research and education institutions occupy a special place in higher education. Their architectural image and interior space should be designed to produce special impact on students, educating them in visual and spatial culture.

Architectural schools and departments at leading universities demonstrate a variety of spatial arrangements within university campuses; less often do they present stand-alone buildings in a city context.

Successful, efficient and visually effective architectural education centres invariably have some sort of semantic recreation and communication space, which acts as a uniting core.

Irrespective of the type of building, establishing the image of an architectural school, either within university campus or as a separate project, presents an important issue, which is resolved in different ways. However, in many cases the architectural concept is based on the educational and research concept of "a flow" between various spaces, and their symbiosis creates a memorable image, a "magnet" for would-be students and researchers.
