ARCHITECTURAL SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY OF ABAKAN IN THE 1920-1960s

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (37) March, 2012

The article reviews the formation of Abakan, the capital of the Republic of Khakassia, in the period from the 1920s to the date of the first master plan of the city approved in 1967.

The objectives of this study were to identify the sources that contributed to the form and plan of Abakan and to consistently describe the architectural and spatial development of the city up until the adoption of the first master plan.

The article identifies settlements that determined the planning structure of the city of Abakan; and examines and describes the architectural and planning changes in the city.

The material of the article is analyzed from two standpoints: the settlement planning structure; and the architectural and spatial environment of the city.

1. The section «Formation of City Planning Structure» presents the results of studying and analysing all known design materials relating to the city since the 1920s to the date of the first master plan. Detailed examination of the design documents enabled us to identify the basic town-planning idea of Abakan, i.e. a regular plan with a network of parallel streets extending strictly from north to south and from west to east, crossing at right angles.

2. The section «Formation of Architectural and Spatial Environment» describes architectural projects characteristic of each of the period under consideration, and the spatial environment. The architectural and spatial environment of Abakan in the 1920-1960s is found to have been progressing from wooden one or two-storied smallholding buildings to first stone public buildings with two to four stories.

ARCHITECTURAL AND SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY OF CHERNOGORSK / THE TOWN OF CHERNOGORSKIYE KOPI OVER THE PERIOD FROM ITS FOUNDATION IN 1907 TO THE FIRST MASTER PLAN OF 1965 (ON THE STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM)

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (35) September, 2011

The article considers the development of the city of Chernogorsk (Republic of Khakassia) from its origin as a settlement to the first master plan, i.e. from 1907 to 1965

The author describes the history of the settlement since its origin and evolution into a workers’ settlement and a city as a characteristic type of urban settlement during the period of large-scale design and construction of new cities in the country.

The historical conditions that preceded the establishment of the settlement and its further evolution into a city of republican level are identified.

All material is structured and analyzed from four basic positions:

1) historical conditions preceding the establishment of the settlement;
2) formation of the settlement’s spatial structure;
3) initial planning activities;
4) the start of architectural and spatial organisation of the settlement.

The historical conditions include: the discovery of a coal field, development of coal mining industry, transport, and local industries.

The formation of the settlement’s spatial structure followed the development of coal mines, with the setting up of initial miners’ settlements. Further evolution was influenced by the construction of a railway, a railway station and a settlement around the station, which later gave origin to Chernogorsk.

With regard to initial planning activities, the article considers all stages in the evolution of Chernogorsk city plan and the role of country’s design consultancies in the city planning work.

The section «The Beginnings of Architectural and Spatial Organisation of the Settlement» reviews the availability of building materials and contractors in the city. The initial stage in the construction of the settlement is considered from the viewpoint of functional typology of architectural objects.
