AN EVOLUTIONARY MODEL FOR THE HISTORICAL PLANNING SYSTEM OF THE CITY OF ROSTOV-ON-DON

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (73) March, 2021

The study has revealed five main phases in the evolution of Rostov-on-Don’s plan over the entire period of its existence from the foundation of Rostov Fortress in the second half of the 17th century to the present day. These periods were identified by key events, whether solitary or multiple, related to the basic structuring factors: the founding of settlements, transit of central functions, merger of towns, change of planning grids, significant territorial growth, etc. Two periods are united by a common context of the time when Rostov and Nakhichevan existed in parallel. The study is based on a cartographic analysis of the historical plans of Rostov-on-Don and settlements that preceded it.

PRIMARY ELEMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL MORPHOTYPES OF RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPING IN ST. PETERSBURG IN THE 18th CENTURY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (69) March, 2020

Based on the 1753 Truscott plan, the first period of St. Petersburg’s historical landscaping system has been studied. Urban areas which represent the local level of the system and primary landscaping elements within them are identified. Landscaping morphotypes are considered with reference to manor, burgher and regimental building types as combinations of primary elements. The distribution of the morphotypes across the city is ascertained.
