DEVELOPMENT OF THE WESTERN RESIDENTIAL AREA IN ROSTOV-ON-DON DURING THE PERIOD OF SOVIET MODERNISM

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (76) December, 2021

The introduction of advanced technologies in the urban planning practice of Rostov-on-Don in the 1960– 1980s may be divided into three successive stages. Each of them corresponds with the construction of three major residential areas: along Lenin Avenue, and in the western and northern areas. The western residential area became the city’s first example of the scientific approach characterizing the urban planning of Soviet modernism type. This approach involved standardized calculations of functional zone accessibility and creation of a tiered system of public services. The paper presents a comprehensive urban planning analysis of preserved graphic materials, implemented solutions and current situation in the district. The study has established the dates of development, building stories arrangements, standard designs, provision of cultural and consumer services, and placement of schools and preschool institutions. A general scheme of district’s functioning is drawn up. The study has enabled the author to identify the most characteristic features of Rostov-on-Don planning during the 1960–1980s that determined the further spreading of the principles of modernism in the city.

THE THEATER OF MUSICAL COMEDY IN ROSTOV-ON-DON: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS AND THEIR IMPLEMENTATION

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (72) December, 2020

The Theater of Musical Comedy in Rostov-on-Don is a unique structure that clearly reflects the features of Soviet modernism. This landmark building is known for its long history of design and implementation (1969-1999). Its construction lasted almost 25 years. This, of course, affected the architectural and artistic appearance of the building. The various design proposals and the actual project have significant differences in stylistic techniques: the bold forms of brutalism appearing in the initial developments remained on paper and the building that embellished the central street of the city was significantly influenced by the minimalistic trends of the 1990s. Based on archival materials, the paper attempts to analyze the evolution of the theater’s design solutions, evolving from eccentric dynamic volumes to a static monumental composition, shows the changes that took place during implementation, and identifies their causes and contexts.

SOVIET MODERNISM IN THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF THE 1960–1980s SPORTS FACILITIES IN ROSTOV-ON-DON

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (69) March, 2020

The article provides a multi-aspect analysis of the sports facilities implemented in the 1960–1980s in Rostov-on-Don: Sports Palace, swimming pools, gyms, wrestling halls, and stadiums. Field surveys of the surviving objects and textual and graphic materials discovered during the study have revealed structural, planning, spatial, compositional, architectural and artistic features of the facilities enabling them to be classified as examples of Soviet Modernism at regional level. Examination of the current condition of these sports facilities unravels Soviet Modernism trends in the architecture of that period.
