CONFLICTS IN ARCHITECTURAL ACTIVITY: POSSIBILITIES OF PREVENTION
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (61) March, 2018
Conflicts in architectural and planning activities are considered to be a consequence of the lack of essential communication between the participants of the architectural process. Based on a study of the regulatory documents and histories of major architectural projects in Ekaterinburg, the author suggests relevant patterns of communication. These patterns help identify which interactions lack for preventing a conflict and show ways to solve arising problems.

BORN BY THE ENVIRONMENT. USE OF CONTEXTUAL DESIGN FOR INFILL DEVELOPMENT IN EKATERINBURG
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (34) June, 2011
To preserve or create a comfortable urban environment in case of infill development, the new building should not only be expressive and functional but it also should become a harmonious part of the composition. For achieving this goal, contextual design is often used, whereby the shaping of the new project proceeds under the influence of the site’s planning specifics, social requirements, and the architecture of surrounding buildings and structures.
An example of contextual design in Ekaterinburg is the multipurpose housing estate at 18 N.Nikonov Street. The form of this housing estate was developed using the following architectural methods:
- solution of the issue of functional zone boundaries by suggesting a general composition of volumes, improvement elements and facade finishing;
- logical termination of Krasny lane’s silhouette, addition of rhythm to the silhouette of the square, and layout of entrance to the residential blocks;
- subordination of the new development to the existing plan of the neighbourhood;
- resolution of contradictions that emerged in this development by including references to elements of the surrounding buildings’ elevations and creating a single composition;
- provision of a more comfortable environment for residents and passers-by.
The multipurpose complex that has emerged in the centre of Ekaterinburg shows that contextual design based on thorough consideration of surroundings helps achieve qualitative changes in an urban space.
