Metaphors of Revolution in the Work of the 'First Wave' Russian Émigré Artist Grigory Musatov

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (63) September, 2018

The article is devoted to two paintings created by the Russian émigré artist Grigory Musatov (1889-1941) in 1931 during his life in Czechoslovakia. Due to a number of circumstances, the creative work of this master, who received professional recognition in Prague in the interwar period, is little known to Russian art historians. In turn, the Czech scholars who touched upon the work of G.A. Musatov are familiar with his paintings The Road to Kolkhoz and The Boy with the Serpent, but still these pieces have never become the subject of a special analysis. This study focuses on the thematic and conceptual kinship of these works. The proposed interpretation of them as the artist's metaphorical comprehension of the October Revolution results is based on the analysis of these paintings from the perspective of their symbolic content in the context of Russian art of the first third of the 20th century.
