DEVELOPMENT OF THE TECHNOLOGY OF SOD CONSTRUCTION IN THE PROCESS OF SIBERIAN AND AMERICAN FRONTIERS MOVEMENTS OF THE 17th-19th CENTURIES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (45) March, 2014

The article covers issues related to the development of the technology of soil, and, in particular, sod construction and its wide use during the American and Siberian frontier movements of the 17th-19th centuries. We examine the origins of the technology starting from Kukuten-Tripolskaya culture of the 10th-3rd centuries B.C. and before the beginning of the colonizing processes in Siberia and America. We analyse the reasons for the wide spread of the construction types under study at the stages of stabilization during the period of the Siberian and American frontier. We propose the notion of «plastyanka» for scientific usage, which is a small residential or auxiliary building made up of layers of sod, the material that was very widely used among Siberian settlers. The study also covers issues of modernization of the technology of sod construction with the purpose of improving use characteristics, including wall plastering and planking, introduction of a wooden carcass, and provision of a stone foundation.
