THE EVOLUTION OF AMENITY PLANTING ON THE ABSHERON PENINSULA IN THE CONTEXT OF INTENSIVE URBANISATION
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (41) March, 2013
In the context of intensive urbanisation on the Absheron peninsula, amenity planting and its role in the creation of a healthier environment and improvement of the climate of Baku and the entire Absheron peninsula is gaining increasing importance. In considering the evolution of amenity planting on Absheron, it should be noted that despite the adverse natural climatic factors and extensive urbanization of the peninsula, Baku and settlements around it turned into green and comfortable communities as a result of large-scale landscaping and gardening work. In 1992 the green area reached a peak of 15,000 hectares and then started to gradually shrink as a result of extensive high-rise construction. Despite isolated attempts to improve the existing parks and squares, the city lost more than half of its green area by 2010. In recent years only have we observed a tendency towards expansion of the city’s "green lungs”. One of such projects is the Seaside National Park expansion project and the establishment of a new park to replace the slums in the Besh Mertebe district, etc. The regional plan also provides for the expansion of parks and woodlands. Thus, according to the regional development plan for Greater Baku, by 2030 the area of amenity planting on Absheron should increase to 39,600 hectares, including 2,100 hectares in Baku. A green belt will be set up around Baku, with large woodlands created in the western, eastern and south-western parts of the peninsula. The author identifies the principal directions for the development of amenity planting on Absheron and improvement of the environment in this region.
