The article deals with the problem of loss by architectural monuments of their initial value characteristic - authenticity. On the basis of the axiological approach, the author analyses implications arising from the replacement of original buildings by modern replicas and outlines ways to overcome the authenticity crisis.

The article considers the issue of effective use of architectural heritage from the viewpoint of maximisation of values inherent in it. The author reviews the contemporary tendencies in the adaptation of historical buildings and identifies the main drawbacks in the existing strategy of adaptation. Ways to maximize individual values of architectural monuments during the re-use design phase are proposed.
