THE ROLE OF AN ARCHITECT IN ARCHITECTURAL MANAGEMENT

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (79) September, 2022

The article deals with issues related to the organizational and managerial activities of the architect of an investment and construction project during architectural production. The problem of the success of the project does not fit within the narrow professional competence of the architect; nor is it limited to the exercise of individual abilities (intelligence, creativity, education) in the creative process of developing an architectural solution that meets the circumstances and conditions existing in relation to the object designed. Practical actions are needed to organize the architectural design process aimed at delivering the project, and these should be timely and reasonable in the current design situation. This makes it necessary for the architect to perform the functions of an architectural project manager.
The specific features of the architectural management process are noted. The aspects of the role reflecting the architect's relations with specialists and project participants are outlined. The importance of the organizational and managerial activity of the architect in relation to the effectiveness of the architectural design process is emphasized.
Studying issues related to the management of architectural projects is important from the point of view of the organization of professional training of architects.

ASPECTS OF PRODUCTIVITY IN ARCHITECTURAL CREATIVITY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (74) June, 2021

The article considers issues associated with the assessment of personality qualities enabling one to be productive in architecture and planning. This is important primarily for understanding the essence of architectural creativity: what does creative activity manifest itself in and how is it expressed (specific of this type of activity and its products) with reference to the architect/designer; what personal qualities influence the effectiveness of the design process? Emphasis is made on the specifics of architectural creativity, defining distinctive features of architectural design thinking.

THE DYNAMIC QUALITIES OF INNOVATIVE FACADES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (66) June, 2019

The article considers issues connected with the expression of dynamics in contemporary architecture. The main trends in the representation of dynamism are: artistic imitation of architectural form dynamism, real dynamics based on transformation and/or mechanical motion of form, dynamics of façade elements (intelligent facades), dynamic light installations (media facades). The dynamic qualities of an architectural object (whether illusory or real) facilitate, through its morphology, the artistic and figurative comprehension of its composition.

ISSUES IN MATHEMATIZATION OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE POST-NONCLASSICAL PERIOD

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (53) March, 2016

The evolution of civilisation is associated with architecture. Architects embody ideas in images and construct various forms and spatial configurations, description of which by mathematical methods and computer simulations provides the clarity, accuracy and structure that are not always achievable verbally. Mathematics is by right among the major achievements of humankind, and its problems, whether solved or unsolved, have been guiding and stimulating human creativity for many years. Trends in contemporary mathematization of architecture are defined by the productive capabilities provided by information and mathematical modelling technologies.

GEOMETRIC MODELLING OF ARCHITECTURAL FORMS AND URBAN PLANNING STRUCTURES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (50) June, 2015

As well as any type of modelling, geometric modelling of architectural forms and urban planning structures is determined by a series of identifying signs: purpose, object, means and methods, theoretical importance and practical application. Modelling as a method of studying objects of cognition by means of models is realised by constructing a conditional image perceived through certain properties/characteristics as an analogue of these objects, i.e. a model is regarded as a homomorphic representation of the original/modelled object. The resemblance of the model to the original is always incomplete: the model only approximately mirrors some essential properties of the original. A real object can have various homomorphic models. It should be borne in mind that the nature of models can be different: physical/material models in the form of samples, designs, mockups; sign-based models such as geometric/graphic representations, diagrams, charts; mathematical, presented as formulas, symbolical notations; information models including text descriptions and databases.

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS OF ARCHITECTURAL ACTIVITY. THE SYNERGY APPROACH

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (47) September, 2014

Innovative development of the economy in the context of sufficient information (knowledge, know-how, applied methods and technologies, materials) and global communications (versatility and availability of information sources, international transfer and borrowing of innovations, hi-tech manufacture, intellectual products) causes radical (essential) changes in architecture and town planning (new concepts and styles, goals and objectives, ways and methods of realisation).

MODELLING OF A SPACE OF COMPROMISE IN ARCHITECTURE AND TOWN-PLANNING

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (46) June, 2014

The article considers a development concept for the architectural environment of a deprived area as a "space of compromise» from the perspective of a systems approach to the structural planning of basic elements and relationships between central subspaces based on mathematical modelling of social, economic, technological and other processes and city environment objects. The authors identify hidden mechanisms underlying the emergence and evolution of such environmental systems through identification of systemic relations, factors, and constructions. Tendencies are noted towards organic embedding of architectural elements into the environment resulting in integration of natural and anthropogenous landscapes (similarity of forms in architecture and design to natural forms).

THE SINERGETIC APPROACH TO ARCHITECTURAL ACTIVITY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (42) June, 2013

The modelling of complex developing systems of a natural, technical and social character (for example, city space) in the modern-day context is determined based on the principles of synergetics. It is therefore important to clearly understand the methodological foundations and technologies of such modelling. Synergetics describes the mechanism of self-organisation of complex systems in the condition of their instability. This makes it essential to define the factors and conditions that identify transients (including in architectural and town-planning formations): bifurcation points and possible fluctuations, probable scenarios of development, and cascade rhythm parameters that determine the pace characteristics. Also, noteworthy is the potential of information (computer) support for research, analysis and modelling of complex systems.

IT-BASED MATHEMATICAL MODELLING FOR ADDRESSING ARCHITECTURE AND TOWN-PLANNING CHALLENGES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (37) March, 2012

Contemporary architecture and town-planning practice is characterised by broad use of mathematical modelling methods for simulating social, economic, technological and other processes and objects in a city environment, supported by massive high-quality information (based on wide and multilevel use of computer facilities, software and hardware).

IT-based mathematical modelling includes relevant data gathering, data processing (data management or structuring), data transformation algorithm (encapsulation), development of a mathematical model, model geometrisation (computer visualisation), and geometric constructions (transformations).

Any mathematical model is some sort of abstraction reflecting chosen essential properties of objects or processes under consideration. The selection and formalisation procedure provides a mathematical description of the phenomenon, i.e. its mathematical model which can be further investigated by mathematical methods. The use of mathematical models and modelling results takes place on the basis of their interpretation in real contexts. Their use will be justified and effective if the model is sufficiently adequate and mathematical results may be practically implemented. To understand a certain phenomenon (on the basis of its mathematical description) mathematics develops, like any usual language does, metaphors (figurative representations) making it possible to explain this phenomenon by associating it with another phenomenon which is more habitual or perceived as such.

Along with mathematical methods, use is made of information (computer) technologies for problem solving, computing experiments are performed, and the mathematical model is numerically processed. Particularly noteworthy are the capabilities of contemporary information technologies and software for processing spatial information and constructing digital 3D models. Geometrisation of town-planning (architectural) projects involves the use of geometric modelling methods enabling professionals to visualise objects under investigation or, more precisely, their models.

METHODOLOGY OF SYSTEMS ANALYSIS IN ARCHITECTURE

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (34) June, 2011

System concepts and ideas derived and used in various spheres/areas of research (social, economic, technological, information, etc.) are the result of identification of characteristics/principles that are common to various sorts/types of complex systems. These concepts include ideas of self-organisiation and evolution, wholeness, hierarchical organisation (with levels of analysis) based on the notions of system (elements, links), structure (morphology, order), subsystem (components, units of system hierarchy), environment (the dichotomy «system-systemic environment»), process invariants (period of life, transition unit, temporal state), classification of basic properties and processes in systems (functional properties and relationships, development and functioning processes).

Advanced architectural modelling based on system concepts is taking advantage of information technologies/computers. These enable effective realisation of sophisticated recursive procedures in the design of architectural projects and town planning systems possessing many of the fractal properties.

An urban environment as a whole, considered as a continuous structure in space with a complex morphology, functioning in time, unfolds in the context of global processes (both natural and anthropogenic), influencing all aspects of human life and covering all areas of society’s activities. At the same time, functional development occurs in interrelation with the changing spatial organisation of the city (as an interrelated and integrated system).

PROGRAMS OF FORM SELF-ORGANIZATION LOGIC AND FORM MUTATIONS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (33) March, 2011

Contemporary research in various fields of science is in need of better ways for representing objects and processes without any unreasonable simplification of their structure whilst making provisions for the ignoring of certain properties (probably, essential) of processes and phenomena investigated. Modern-day architecture – from objects and fragments to complete city spaces - is a complex system underpinned by synergy principles, which should not be ignored when developing an urban environment and designing new objects in it. An awareness of synergy principles influences the architectonic representation of an urban environment, which allows town-planning concepts to be developed taking into account new materials, technologies and opportunities.

ON FRACTAL MODELS IN ARCHITECTURE

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (30) June, 2010

Modern-day research in various branches of science requires better representations of objects and processes, without smoothing the form, contours, surfaces, unreasonable simplification of their structure, organized ignoring of some properties (possibly, essential and characteristic) of objects and processes studied. Fractals are mathematical models of complex structures whose spatial images are represented in an idea of broken, wrinkled and indistinct forms. In this article, fractals are considered as mathematical abstractions which possess some characteristic properties. Such fractal structures are widely used not only in natural but also artificial environments. An understanding natural fractality influences architectural representation of urban environment, which will make it possible to develop town-planning concepts allowing for new technologies, materials, means and opportunities.
