Terminological issues in studying the interaction between sculpture and architecture in the last third of the 20th – early 21st century

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (87) September 2024

We examine the problem of dissimilarities in the terminology used in studies on the interaction between architecture and sculpture at the present stage of development. The purpose of the article is to determine the specifics of the historiography of the terms and identify the main terminological problems associated with the study of the synthesis of sculpture and architecture in the last third of the 20th - early 21st century. Source study methods and comparative analysis help reveal problems of polysemanticism and the uncertainty of the boundaries of the terms used in relation to the arts under consideration. A historiographic analysis is performed, involving studies addressing the theory of architecture and sculpture and mechanisms of interaction between these arts. The analysis reveals contradictions between the meanings of individual terms used, defines the subject area of the studies, and questions the use of the term "communication" in relation to architecture and sculpture.

MORPHOLOGICAL BOUNDARIES OF SCULPTURE AND ARCHITECTURE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH - EARLY 21ST CENTURY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (76) December, 2021

The specifics of changes in the morphological boundaries of architecture and sculpture in the second half of the 20th – early 21st century are considered. The blurring of clearcut borders between established artistic categories is one of the central lines of development in contemporary art. Late 20th – early 21st century sculpture and architecture are used as examples to demonstrate the shifting of the morphological boundaries of these arts. Architecturality and sculpturality are highlighted as qualities of modern artworks that have gone beyond the boundaries of their specific categories.
