INFORMATION SIGNAL ANALYSIS OF PROPORTION SYSTEMS IN ARCHITECTURE AND FINE ARTS

The article is devoted to the possibility of applying the information theory to architecture and art, in particular, for analysis and synthesis of proportional systems. A solution is provided to a modelling problem on selection of a preferable ratio between a pair of abstract lengths. This methodology has formed a basis for the scientific metaphor of the work – the noise resistance of an image at the transmission of a signal as the initial plan of the author of an art work. A scheme of information analysis of proportions is proposed, which can be used for critical studies in the theory and history of architecture.

INTEGRATION OF MATHEMATICAL METHODS INTO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

The article deals with mathematical methods in architecture. It formulates and considers a range of issues relating to the integration of mathematical methods into architectural design. The study carried out by the authors suggests the following conclusions. Firstly, at the moment there are no conditions in the architectural science that could ensure its mathematisation with subsequent progress of any methods thus worked out to the level of architectural design. Secondly, there is a language barrier between architecture and mathematics. Thirdly, architects and mathematicians operate abstractions of differing scope.

The authors believe that the establishment of «Architectural Mathematics» as a discipline would enable the earlier stated problems connected with the integration of mathematics to be approached in a meaningful and comprehensive manner. The first steps in the development of architectural mathematics should involve its introduction into architectural training as a study discipline rather than establishing it as a separate area of architectural science. This would allow would-be architects to understand the place of mathematical methods in architectural design, produce essential models of dialogue between architecture and mathematics at the level of introduction to the speciality, and train those who would then participate in the creation of a "big" architectural mathematics.
In conclusion, the authors propose a concept of «Architectural Mathematics» as a discipline within the framework of a course of architectural design.

INTRODUCTION OF COMPUTER-AIDED PAINTING INTO ARCHITECTURE AND ART CREATIVITY

One of the important areas of computer graphics training in architecture and art education is computer-aided painting. Creating a picture from start to end on a computer is a relatively new trend in fine arts. The "computer painting» technique includes hundreds of steps and involves a special strategy for developing a computer image, as well as an ability to handle unique tools, modifiers and software. Electronic images are created not by rendering computer models but by using computer imitations of artist’s traditional tools. To be able to draw well on the computer, it is necessary to know and be able to apply all of the wealth of skills and knowledge amassed by generations of artists.

Programs for artists contain a unique set of possibilities for media painting. One of the most popular professional software for computer artists is Corel®Painter™. By mastering the toolkits and techniques made available by such software, would-be designers may enhance their career opportunities in various areas: concept art, fashion illustration, photography, etc.

The article outlines conflicts and issues that may arise when introducing computer painting into the teaching and learning process. Ways to resolve these issues may be identified in the course of practical working, teaching, participation in design competitions, design practice, and computer-aided creativity.
