ENGRAVED DESIGNS OF «GRAND MANIÈRE» INTERIORS IN THE TOOLKIT OF FRENCH ILLUSTRATORS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18th CENTURY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (40) December, 2012

The article is devoted to interactions between 17th century design engravings and book illustrations of the second half of the 18th century. The need to address the theme of sources of interiors in illustrations is caused by the fact that the interior background of illustrations is truthful.

In considering the visual treatment of compositions in illustrations through architectural sources, the author of this article addresses one of the possible aspects to this issue – the influence of interior engravings on the creativity of the illustrators. In order to explore this subject, the author has chosen to analyse works by such illustrators as H.Gravelot, F.Boucher, Ch.Eisen, and J.-M. Moreau Jr.

The author draws attention to the tradition among the artists to use 17th century interior projects and identifies a range of sources that the illustrators kept using, such as projects by J. le Pautre and D.Marot. The article draws comparison between the engraved projects of the Grand Manière style and book illustrations of the second half of the 18th century. The comparison reveals methods and techniques used by artists in working with analogues, and based on this, the author attempts to reconstruct the process of creating the composition of an illustration. Determining the role of architectural sources in developing the composition of an illustration helps unravel the mechanisms underlying the creativity of some of the artists.

TECHNIQUES USED FOR DEPICTING EARLY NEOCLASSICISM INTERIORS IN FRENCH BOOK ILLUSTRATION OF THE 1750-1770s

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (33) March, 2011

The article is devoted to French book illustrations of the middle and second half of the 18th century with reference to interior images. It presents detailed descriptions of individual series of illustrations in early neo-classicist literary works created by such mid-18th century illustrators as H.Gravelot, Ch.Eisen. The author analyzes the techniques used for depicting Transition-style interiors in book illustrations, considers the role of the interior in the composition of an illustration and compares various concepts of depicting interior backgrounds in book illustrations.

The article defines such theoretical concepts as early Neoclassicism, Greek taste, le style Transition and contains information concerning certain features of early neo-classicist interiors. The author considers variants of presenting early neo-classicist interiors in book illustrations. An attempt is made to establish the degree of accuracy between the images and the original interiors and to identify the properties of the background interior of a book illustration. The author is also interested in the semantics of the interior image in illustrations. A comparison is made between the techniques used by one engraver for depicting early neo-classicist interiors in various series of illustrations, and between techniques used by different engravers for depicting interiors. The article is based on original sources, i.e. engravings from a variety of French publications dating to the mid-18th century
