EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY’S PUBLIC SPACE IN HISTORICAL EVOLUTION

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (65) March, 2019

The article traces the evolution of the main public space in European universities, from Ancient Greek gymnasium to the late 19th century universities. The main stages and characteristic features of public space development are highlighted. The author follows the evolution of university public space from an inner court surrounded with galleries to a domed multistory space up to modern-day “atrium”. It is argued that the main public space of the university – a courtyard, both open and covered – was the spatial core of the university complex throughout its history.
