This article examines the comprehensive approach to the arrangement of a functional planning structure for tourist recreational areas and tourist centres in the historical cities in the USSR in the period from the 1920s to the 1980s and provides an overview of the Soviet project development practice with reference to tourist centres at cities with a rich historical architectural heritage. Theoretical analysis of the research findings has provided an insight into the specific features and principles of the comprehensive approach to designing tourist recreational architecture.
