The article deals with the improvement of a preschool educational institution site within a health-maintaining architectural space. A number of esthetic techniques are identified for improving the area and arranging functional zones in preschool educational institution sites.

ASPECTS RELATING TO THE FORMATION OF AN ARCHITECTURAL ENVIRONMENT FOR PRESCHOOL EDUCATION

Today Russia is experiencing an acute shortage of children's educational institutions (CEI). The lack of proper conditions for care and education at preschool age leads to missed opportunities for child development during one of the most important periods in human life. A review of the current model of education and the architectonic environment of existing buildings has allowed us to identify a number of contradictions. The author has singled out basic directions in the development of the architectural environment for preschool education according to three levels of design.

At town-planning level, the author proposes the development of a network of CEIs ensuring wide variety and accessibility through the use of different opening hours arrangements and geographic locations in the city fabric; safety and environmental protection of CEI; integration of CEI into the urban network of social centres.

Given the natural and environmental conditions of the Ural region, the author proposes to include inclined elements (ramps, slopes, etc.) into the spatial composition, which may be used as an excellent playground in summertime and ensure perfect conditions for making an ice slide in winter.

By way of optimizing the functional plan of an architectural environment for preschool education, techniques are proposed for achieving flexibility, mobility, functional versatility, spatial variability, age differentiation and adjustable autonomy for CEI of different operation modalities (functional versatility and spatial variability technique, age differentiation and adjustable autonomy technique, a technique for organizing spaces of various degrees of isolation, a technique for compensation for lack of premises, a functional borrowing technique).

With regard to the architectural and artistic aspect of enhancement of CEI aesthetic qualities, a number of changes and transformations are proposed in the plastic organisation of the modern-day architectural environment.

Of fundamental importance for improving the architectural environment of CEI in domestic practice is the incorporation of certain architectural elements used abroad (combined spiral stairs and slide, combined stairs and ramp). Where elements are made of nonflammable materials, they may be used as evacuation routes, which would allow the level of fire safety of Russian CEI to be substantially improved. In addition to the above elements, the recommendation is to use straight and spiral slides/tubes, ramps, and slopes.

The author has developed an essentially new proposal with regard to the treatment of the lower tier of buildings by creating an area on the elevation with special texture characteristics within the range of 2 m from the ground level. The recommendation is to use areas of various textures - smooth (glossy and dull) and rough, hard and semi-hard (wood, plastics), soft and elastic (rubber, rubber granulate, rubber coatings and other polymers).

A review of the approaches to the development of an architectural environment for preschool education sets the ground for improvement and further development of CEI architecture in the context of current reforms in education, research and technology and provides a framework for realizing the idea of creating an advanced architectural environment for preschool education.
