THE CONCEPT OF SOCIAL REGIONALISM IN THE WORKS OF ARCHITECT A.E. KOROTKOVSKY

Based on studies of the legacy of professor A.E. Korotkovsky, a prominent representative of the Ural architectural school (Russia), we present his views on the development of regional architecture from the standpoint of a social approach and explore regionalism trends in the context of social changes taking place in Soviet society. The manifestations of the concept of social regionalism in architecture are highlighted, and the main qualities that characterize the socially perfect architectural form are described.

The role of concept as the trigger of a creative architectural process is investigated. Conceptual modeling is considered as a method of developing a conceptual design. The signs of the conceptual mechanism at work in architectural designing are identified, the network nature of this process is shown, and the outcome and output of conceptual modeling are described.

Training of architecture students in environmental issues is associated with environmental awareness raising and development of environmentally conscious form design skills. At the initial stage, training is oriented to the principles of the ecology of creative personality development (humanistic aspect) and spatial compositional modelling methodology. The latter includes spatial-temporal, socio-psychological and artistic image modelling techniques, reflecting the possibilities of ecologisation of form in the architectural design course and promoting the development of spatial-ecological thinking of would-be architects.

DEVELOPMENT OF ARCHITECTONIC TOPOLOGY

Interaction between architectural environment and community is the principal subject-matter of architectural and town-planning ecology, in which we distinguish a global, regional, town-planning, architectural, and object level. The architectural level of a living environment is a local space, part of a general urban anthropo-ecosystem. Spatial meaning is a component of the systemic concepts of ecology.

Architectural topology, the subject-matter of which is space as a phenomenon that reflects indissoluble connection between the architectural environment and the individual, involves studying of space based on ecological principles. A view of an architectural space from these positions enables us to treat ‘architectural ecological space’ as the key concept of architectural ecological topology. This is a concept of ecologically focused thinking designating the perspective of presentation, studying and formation of a space from the positions of ecological values. Ideally, this is an ecologically relatively homogeneous architectural space ensuring living conditions and sustainable development for the individual in a social and natural environment.

A review of experiences in the classification of spaces and the principles of the ecological approach have allowed us to develop an approach to space typology based on the concept of "ecotype". Ecotypes are typical (from the viewpoint of ecological qualities) sustainable types of architectural space. The basic ecotypes of architectural space include nature-sensitive, ecocentric, anthoropcentric, technocentric, and cybernetic spaces. The proposed typology as a component of a new direction of research into architectural space is aimed to be a contribution to a holistic theory of architectural-ecological form generation and should facilitate the ecologization of architectural environment.

В статье раскрываются основы пространственно-экологического подхода к организации архитектурной среды, дается систематизация пространств по экологическому принципу, демонстрируются приемы экологизации архитектурного пространства. Концепция основана на принципах экоцентрического подхода, выдвигающего в качестве приоритета единство развития человека и окружающей среды.
