Features of inner courtyard spaces in traditional Chinese dwellings and their application in modern regional architectural design

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (85) March, 2024

The article examines the formal characteristics and morphotypes of courtyard spaces in traditional Chinese dwellings, including compositional solutions for groups of courtyard spaces. Continuity of such spaces in modern regional architectural creativity is considered. Based on an analysis of several modern Chinese regional architectural projects, the ways of integrating the courtyard spaces of traditional Chinese buildings into a modern architectural context are discussed. Examples are provided, showing the reconstruction and metaphorical reinterpretation of both individual spaces and combined structures of group spaces of courtyards in the context of integration of modern architectural creativity with traditional national and regional architecture.

The embodiment of the ecological concept and climatic adaptability in the spatial structure of the traditional chinese dwelling with a courtyard

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (84) December, 2023

The article analyzes the logic and distinctive features of the structural construction of traditional Chinese dwellings with a courtyard. A detailed comparison of various types of such dwellings located in different geographical and climatic regions of China allows us to identify their compositional features and unique architectural solutions. The focus of the study is on the ecological principles and strategies of climatic adaptation of various compositional types of courtyards that allowed them to effectively cope with climatic challenges over centuries. Attention is drawn to the basic philosophical concept of harmonious coexistence of man with nature, which underlies the design of optimal types of traditional Chinese dwellings, particularly to passive methods of architectural design that contribute to environmental sustainability and climatic adaptation of these dwellings.

The concept of "Harmony between man and nature" in traditional chinese architectural space

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (83) September 2023

The article is a first ever analysis of the concept of "unity between man and nature" and its three main meanings, which originated from ancient Chinese geography and natural conditions. We consider the embodiment and rules of application of the three levels of this concept in the ancient Chinese architectural space and how it could be applied in modern sustainable city planning and architectural design.

Inventive creativity in architecture: the «forward» and «backward» pathway to creating patentable solutions

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (82) June, 2023

The paper presents the authors’ approach to the methodology of sectoral inventive activity, supported by specific examples of how inventive challenges may be solved for various typological groups of architectural and construction objects. The concepts of "forward" and "backward" pathways to creating spot-on inventive solutions in architecture and construction are formulated. The methodological contents and features of these concepts are defined with regard to their practical implementation for obtaining patentable solutions. It is concluded that these techniques need to be taught to architecture and civil engineering students to increase the competitiveness of graduates in the profession and intensify innovation activities in these industries.
